Homemade Hot Chocolate (3 Ingredients)

Well you asked for it…homemade hot chocolate.  It is so easy to make your own.  The instant mix you purchase at the store is filled with…you guessed it…junk.

Hot Chocolate A

Have you looked at the package of Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate Mix lately?  Yuck.  Go into your pantry right now and throw out any boxes, packages, or tins of hot chocolate mix you have.

Did you do it?  Yes! Great job!  I am so proud of you.  Look at what you have chosen to not put in your body…

sugar, corn syrup, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor. Contains milk.

I can not say one good thing about any of these ingredients.  But I have nothing but good things to say about the ingredients in my made from scratch recipe for hot chocolate.

Hot Chocolate B

Coconut milk contains many beneficial nutrients.  Vitamin C and vitamin E can help boost your immune system, which is especially good now during cold and flu season.  Coconut milk also contains the medium chain fatty acid (MCFA), lauric acid.  This MCFA has antibacterial, anti fungal, and antiviral properties that may also improve your immune health.  Lauric acid can also benefit your blood vessels which may help lower cholesterol and triglycerides.  This may mean a lowered risk for heart disease and stroke.

I only buy full fat coconut milk in a BPA free cans (I have been meaning to try to make my own).  But what about all that fat you ask?  Because the fat in coconuts are MCFA the body processes it differently than other saturated fat making the fat helpful and not harmful.  Full fat foods like this are also great because they help keep us fuller for longer which may actually help keep our weight in check.

Raw cacao contains flavanols, theobromine, and other components that may lower blood pressure and enhance circulation by promoting dilation, strength, and health of blood vessels.  Raw cacao is one of the riches sources of antioxidants which prevent free radicals that can cause damage to our bodies.

You can also buy unsweetened cocoa powder but the beans are roasted.  Raw is not roasted, only fermented and dried, conserving their super food benefits.

Honey has the most health benefits when it is raw, local, and unfiltered.  When honey is processed it often removes the “good stuff.”  The bee pollen (which is often missing when processed) in honey has been known to help with allergies.  Honey is a great sweetener because it contains a nearly 1:1 ratio of fructose to glucose.  Different varieties of honey also contain different kinds of friendly bacteria which can be therapeutic.

3 simple ingredients is all you really need to make a good hot chocolate.  Feel free to add in your own touches.

Doesn’t that just make you want to curl up on the couch with a  nice warm cup of hot chocolate every night?
