Welcome to My Blog!

I am so excited to welcome you to my new blog!  I have been talking about doing this for quite some time.  My goal here is to talk about what I love and am most passionate about…nutrition.  I hope that I can help provide some knowledge to help you decide what foods are best for you and your family.  I want to show you ways you can make food less processed and maybe introduce you to some new foods.  I also would like to prove that there are ways to eating organic on a budget.

I knew I wanted to be a Dietitian since the 7th grade.  I have loved health, nutrition, and food for quite some time and want to share my love with as many people as I can.  I started my career, as a lot of dietitians do, working in the clinical setting of a hospital.  It was a frustrating environment for me.  My job was often times to teach patients about low fat, low cholesterol, low sodium, and low carbohydrate diets in only a short time.  I often experienced patients that would ask for hamburgers and french fries after a session on low fat eating.  It was not very rewarding for me.

About one year ago I changed the way I saw healthy eating.  I thought I was eating healthfully choosing low fat options, leaner cuts of meat, and salads at lunch.  Then I came across a question…do you know what is in your food?  I never really thought about it since I was busy looking at the nutrition label with how many calories and fat grams were in my food.  Have you seen some of the ingredients listed on many popular food items?  Monosodium Glutamate, Maltodextrin, Calcium Stearate?  Why are they there and are they really necessary?  Years ago it was unheard of for these items to be in our food.  Familys were growing their own food and making everything from scratch.  Think about what your grandparents or great-grandparents ate and the state of their health.  The more of these processed foods that are put on the market the unhealthier we are becoming and the more diseases that were once rare are becoming common.

Change is not always easy but even small ones can be helpful.  Knowledge is power.  The more we know about food the better choices we can make and the healthier we can become.  Why not research food we eat daily the same way we would buy a car or a house.  We want to make sure we are getting the best deal and that these items will last a long time without a lot of breakdowns or repairs…just like us.
