Date Sriracha Ketchup

Date Sriracha Ketchup 3

I just recently became part of a group called Recipe Redux.  It is a group of food bloggers that have a passion for healthier food.  Every month we get an new assignment.  We then have the freedom to get creative and create a recipe that is inspired by that special assignment.  Right up my alley.  Today is my first post as being part of the group and boy am I in good company, truly some of the best food bloggers around are in this group.  The challenge was to come up with a healthy recipe that was smoky or spicy.  I knew immediately that I wanted to make this Date Sriracha Ketchup.  A healthy take on ketchup with no sugar or anything artificial that tastes better than the store bought and is so easy to make.  Are you interested yet?

Date Sriracha Ketchup 2

I had this idea for awhile but this was the push I needed to see it threw and I am so glad that I did.  This idea was inspired by a combination of things.  On vacation recently I had a black bean burger from a local food truck that slathered the bun with a date ketchup.  Traditional store bought ketchup is often sweetened with high fructose corn syrup…yuck.  Adding dates to the ketchup is about as natural as it gets when it comes to sweeteners.  Totally my kind of thing.

Date Sriracha Ketchup

The inspiration to add sriracha came from one my husband and mines favorite restaurants here in town. They serve sliders with a sriracha ketchup which I fell in love with immediately.  Slightly spicy but not mouth numbing, which is the kind of spice that I like.  How about combining both?  Done and done!

This is my new favorite condiment and I will never buy ketchup ever again.  This healthy ketchup contains only 5 (100% REAL) ingredients and is very little effort to make.  Slightly sweet with a slight finish of spiciness.  Gourmet ketchup, but it is so easy!

    1. I used diced tomatoes in the jar. You could use tomato sauce or whole tomatoes too. You could use fresh tomatoes too if you wanted and add a bit more liquid.

  1. What about using tomatoe paste ? Would this work? Also what is the consistency of this ketchup recipe ? Is it similar to real ketchup or watered down ? I have bought paleo store bought in the past with no sugar added but consistently is terrible. Trying to find a good replacement for my kiddos that love ketchup! Very creative recipe !

    1. I think tomato paste would be too much. Since it is much more concentrated I think it would be overly tomato tasting and probably be very thick. But I haven’t tested it. I don’t think you can make homemade ketchup that is as smooth at the bottle stuff but the consistency is very similar. My husband is picky with certain things and he really loved this version. I hope your kids enjoy it!
