Why Your Subconscious Beliefs Sabotage Healing & How to Change Them

You know that feeling. You set the intention to change. You make the plan. You buy the supplements, join the gym, or commit to that new morning routine. But somehow, weeks later, you find yourself right back where you started.

Sound familiar?

If you’re struggling to make lasting changes that support your healing journey, you’re not alone. The truth is, willpower alone isn’t enough. The real culprit behind your repeated “fresh starts” might be lurking beneath the surface of your conscious mind.

The Hidden Force Behind Self-Sabotage

Carl Jung captured this phenomenon perfectly when he said, “Until we make the unconscious conscious, we will call it fate.” What feels like bad luck or lack of discipline is often something much deeper: limiting beliefs that operate below the radar of your awareness.

These beliefs act like invisible puppet strings, pulling you back into familiar patterns even when you consciously want something different. They whisper things like:

  • “I don’t deserve to feel good.”
  • “Healing is too hard for someone like me.”
  • “I always fail at this stuff.”
  • “If I get better, people won’t take care of me anymore.”
  • “Diets are restrictive, so I shouldn’t have to remove foods to heal.”

The frustrating part? You might not even realize these thoughts are running the show.

Why We Get Stuck in the “I’ll Start Tomorrow” Loop

Your subconscious mind is designed to keep you safe and comfortable. It perceives change as potentially dangerous, even when that change would benefit you. So it creates elaborate defense mechanisms:

The Excuse Factory: Suddenly, every reason not to take action seems completely rational. You’re too busy, too tired, or you need to research just a little bit more.

Temporary Success Syndrome: You make progress for a few days or weeks, then something “comes up” that derails you completely.

All-or-Nothing Thinking: You miss one day of your new routine and decide the whole plan is ruined, so why bother continuing?

These aren’t character flaws—they’re your mind’s way of maintaining the status quo, even when the status quo isn’t serving you.

The Transformational Power of Belief Work

This is where transformational coaching becomes invaluable. Working with a skilled practitioner can help you excavate the beliefs that have been running your life from behind the scenes.

Unlike traditional coaching that focuses on strategies and goal-setting, transformational coaching dives deeper. It helps you:

  • Identify the stories you’ve been telling yourself
  • Understand where these beliefs originated
  • Challenge their validity in your current life
  • Create new, empowering beliefs that support your healing

The process isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes you’ll discover beliefs that surprise you or trace patterns back to childhood experiences you thought were insignificant. But this awareness is the first step toward genuine transformation.

The Three-Step Process for Changing Limiting Beliefs

Transforming deeply held beliefs requires more than positive thinking. Here’s a proven framework that actually works:

Step 1: Become Aware of Your Beliefs

Most of our beliefs operate automatically. To change them, you first need to catch them in action. Start paying attention to:

  • The thoughts that arise when you consider making changes
  • The emotions that surface when you think about healing
  • The excuses that feel most compelling
  • The patterns that keep repeating in your life

Try this exercise: For one week, write down every reason you give yourself for not taking action on your healing goals. Don’t judge them—just notice them. You’ll start to see patterns emerge.

Step 2: Develop the Willingness to Change

Awareness alone isn’t enough. You need to genuinely want to change these beliefs, which can be harder than it sounds. Some beliefs feel protective, even when they’re limiting you.

Ask yourself:

  • What is this belief costing me?
  • How is it affecting my relationships, health, and happiness?
  • What would be possible if I didn’t believe this anymore?
  • Am I ready to let this belief go, even if it feels scary?

Step 3: Gather Counter-Evidence and Build New Beliefs

Your brain needs proof that old beliefs aren’t true and that new beliefs are valid. This is where the real work happens.

For each limiting belief, actively look for evidence that contradicts it:

  • Times when you succeeded despite obstacles
  • Examples of others who’ve overcome similar challenges
  • Small wins and progress you’ve made in the past
  • Resources and support are available to you now

Simultaneously, start building new beliefs with supporting evidence:

  • Collect stories of transformation and healing
  • Document your own small wins, no matter how minor they seem
  • Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential
  • Practice new thought patterns consistently

The Cellular Reality of Change

Here’s what many people don’t realize: changing beliefs requires cellular energy (this is where minerals become important). Your brain literally needs to form new neural pathways while weakening old ones. This process takes time and consistent effort.

It also requires:

Discipline: Not the harsh, militaristic kind, but gentle persistence in choosing new thoughts and actions.

Habits and Self-Care: Your nervous system needs support during periods of change. Regular sleep, nutrition, rest, fun, and stress management aren’t luxuries—they’re necessities.

Celebration: Your brain learns through repetition and reward. Celebrating small wins reinforces new patterns and makes change more sustainable.

Moving from Fate to Freedom

The journey from unconscious belief patterns to conscious choice isn’t always linear. You’ll have setbacks. You’ll catch yourself falling into old patterns. This is normal and expected.

The difference is that now you have awareness. Instead of calling it fate, you can recognize it as an opportunity to practice choosing differently.

Remember, every time you choose a new thought or action despite feeling resistance, you’re literally rewiring your brain. Each small choice builds momentum for the next one.

Your Next Steps

Transformation begins with honest self-reflection. Start by asking yourself:

  • What beliefs might be holding me back from the healing I want?
  • Have I even considered that my struggles might be belief-related?
  • What would I attempt if I truly believed it was possible?
  • Who could support me in this process of uncovering and changing these patterns?

Consider working with a transformational coach who can guide you through this process with skill and compassion. Sometimes we need an outside perspective to see the beliefs that are invisible to us.

Your healing journey doesn’t have to be a series of false starts and frustrating setbacks. When you address the root cause—your underlying belief system—lasting change becomes not just possible, but inevitable.

The unconscious patterns that have been running your life can finally become conscious choices. And once that happens, you’re no longer at the mercy of fate. You become the author of your own transformation story.

I believe ANY HEALING JOURNEY ultimately needs to involve addressing BOTH the body and the mind in the proper way and in the proper order, which will be highly individual.

It is also a HUGE reason why many people feel stuck on their own healing journeys because this concept hasn’t been adequately acknowledged, understood, or addressed.
